Housing Your Rabbit

Before you buy a rabbit, you should first consider how you plan to house your rabbit. It could be housed indoors, or it could be housed outdoors.

If you choose to house it in a cage or hutch outside, you need to make sure that the place that the hutch/cage will be set up in is protected from wind, rain, sunlight or predator animals.

When buying a cage, make sure that it is:

  1. Properly ventilated; avoid using solid wooden boxes as cages or hutches.
  2. Made of solid materials, if it is metal, make sure it is not cheap thin wires that rust easily or may cause sore hocks easily.
  3. Easily accessible by you — so that you can clean it easily!
  4. Easy to mount feeders or waterers on. Waterers or water bottles are the most hygienic way of feeding your rabbit water (or sometimes food in the case of food feeders) without running the risk of your rabbit pooping or peeing into their food/water. Always ensure clean water is given to your rabbit at all times.
